What comes to mind when you hear the word devoted?

If someone is devoted to track, they will run regularly.  If someone is devoted to an instrument they will practice a lot.   What is something you are devoted to?  What do you do because of your devotion?

What do you think it looks like for someone to be devoted to the Lord?  What do they do?

In the book of Acts, we see the first people to ever become Christians after Jesus left.  We then see these new Christians devoted themselves to some things.  (Acts 2:42) They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

They devoted to the apostles’ teaching (the New Testament in your bible is the apostle’s teaching written down). They devoted themselves to fellowship and eating together. And they devoted themselves to prayer.

What do you think it means to be devoted to each of these?

  • The Apostles Teaching
  • Fellowship
  • Prayer

How would ignoring one of these affect a believer’s relationship with God?

Make it Personal

Be honest.  Have you been devoted to prayer in your daily life? What keeps you from praying?

We can pray at any time throughout our day. You can pray in the car, in the shower, at your desk before a test, or at lunch.  Do you ever pray small prayers throughout the day?  What is the benefit of talking to God throughout the day?

We should also have a time that we purposefully spend a few minutes praying.  When is a good time for you to intentionally pray alone?

When you have a time of prayer, what do you pray about?

It is so important that we develop relationships with other believers.  What are some things you do to purposefully develop these relationships?

Why is simply spending time with other believers important?
